Neurotransmitter disorders are due to under-production of serotonin and dopamine, which are necessary for neural communication, especially in the brain. Disorders include anxiety, depression, insomnia, phobias and obsessive-compulsion, and, in advanced stages, are responsible for bipolar disorder, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and senility. In Chinese medicine, these problems are seen as heart shen, liver or kidney patterns. While herbal medicines are useful and important, they often need to be supplemented with large amounts of amino acids and co-factors to effect a lasting change. Useful herbal medicines, supplements, and lab tests will be discussed.
