GERDS (gastritis, acid reflux) is a common clinical presentation. Conventional medicine treats with antacids and protein pump inhibitors to control symptoms, but without offering a lasting cure. Chinese medicine approaches this disorders by establishing the root cause for the individual patient, and treating accordingly. Gastritis is a disharmony of liver and spleen, often combined with various deficiency patterns. In Functional medicine, the problem may be due to a deficiency of hydrochloric acid (not an excess), which in TCM involves deficiency of stomach fire and spleen yang. A solution involves a combination of Chinese herbal medicine, based on pattern differentiation, nutritional supplements, acupuncture, and lifestyle adjustment. Each of these scenarios will be evaluated, with application of available Chinese herbal formulas for the different stages.
