Recent research suggests that maternal and fetal outcomes are better when labor is induced at 39 weeks, although the evidence is debatable. Acupuncturists in this course will learn to successfully engage patients and providers in that debate, suggesting prenatal acupuncture as a safe way to encourage timely natural onset of labor. After a brief review of the clinical trials and underlying mechanisms, we will learn Dr. Citkovitz’s approach to diagnosis and treatment for labor preparation. She will also cover diagnosis, needling, and manual therapies, as well as acupressure, moxa and lifestyle homework, for a comprehensive approach to avoiding unnecessary labor inductions.
